PROTA
Prisoners Reintegration Opportunities and Training in Artificial Environments for Employment
The PROTA project has been funded with the support of the European Union under the Erasmus Plus programme in the field of adult education for a duration of 30 months, from 15/12/2022 to 14/06/2025.
THE ESSENCE: THE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND THE PROJECT
The correctional institutions have the obligation to capacitate the adults exiting their services with improved chances of being accepted by the social canvas, new occupational and social competencies and increased potential for life choices away from vicious circles of repetitive criminal attitudes.
Adults seeking to enter the job market upon release must be prepared with not only technical but most importantly social competencies contributing to their individual learning needs and relevant to all employment or entrepreneurial sectors. These competencies are critical for lifelong learning and citizenship, supporting employment with appropriate attitudes towards labour, work ethic, and communication. Maximizing learning experiences, guidance and support for adults exiting prison or probation, ensures correct opportunities to enhance their lifelong learning competencies and develop appropriate behaviour for a productive meaningful life in the community.

Find out to whom
we are addressing
Teaching staff
Teaching staff and trainers of prisons, probation services and organizations supporting community integration (they are called to provide counselling, support and face the difficulties and obstacles of learning that exist for our adult learners)
Adult learners
Adult learners that are in correctional setting, preparing for release or that are on their journey to adapt to the new community settings: (international research has shown that ex-offenders who have received a combination of counselling, support, training and vocational guidance, both while in prison and ongoing after they leave the institutions, stand better chances of reentering employment and sustaining a crime free lifestyle)
WhatMakesThe Prota Project
Innovative?
- The PROTA project promotes flexible learning pathways for re-engaging disadvantaged individuals using OER (open education resources) and personalized guidance.
- Development, test and evaluation of a Digital Decision Making Tool for assessing adult learners' potential based on abilities, personality, and aspirations.
- Develop, test and evaluate individual-based training models combining employability assessment and social soft skill competencies development.
- Tailormade guidance and personalized employment roadmaps.
- Develop a training process for trainers emphasizing individualized learning and implementation.
- Utilization of VR games to overcome barriers and enhance learning experience.
- With the development of the educator's Tool Kit, the program can be established and delivered by other community support groups and adult education organisations.
Let's Focus On The Needs Of The Partnership And The Target Groups
In most European Prisons the training of competencies is offered as education with a fixed curriculum. The adult learner is placed at a class according to formal knowledge and the training is focused on improving this. This usual approach towards training is rather lacking in impact. Our adult learners are a very diverse target group, do not make an ideal basis for homogenous group training. The ability and needs within the same group of inmates are often too different for a unified approach. So there is an important need for a changed approach to teaching and supporting adult learners in corrections focusing more on fostering individual educational pathways.
The PROTA project can represent a stimulus for innovation and the construction of new paths with prisoners and prison workers. Collaboratively, the project partners will develop cutting-edge training and diagnostic materials for personalized vocational and personal guidance. These resources will be implemented in prison schools, rehabilitation centers, and related support structures. With trained educators utilizing this material, ex-prisoners can be supported in their reintegration journey, boosting their confidence and helping them tap into their full potential.
